The Sex Wars break out at the third Festival: word circulates that some SM films (featuring tattooing, body piercing, and flogging) are on the schedule, which leads to a protest and talk of a boycott or a demonstration outside the gallery. A few days before the festival, the organizers and the protestors agree on a compromise: there will be a brief pause and an announcement before the films in question are shown, to allow women who object to leave. On the day, several dozen audience members do walk out before the films are shown, but for the third year, the festival manages to make a small profit.
